For one of our first tasks to complete we had to listen to a talk by Wilson Miner. This talk allowed me to have a different perspective on design and innovation, and how these creations have impacted people worldwide.

Creations such as a lightbulb have not only gave us the obvious form of light, they have also gave us the opportunity for more communication and interaction between one another. Another thing the lightbulb has gave us is longer working hours, this has impacted the creations of designers. Miner gave us simple creations that have completely changed how we live and how our minds works. “We shape our tools and our tools shape us” was one of the quote that I found incredibly inspiring during this talk. The invention of television has opened our minds to historical events and current activities across the globe.

Miner explained that we don't need incredible creations such as spaceships to change the world. Inventions such as the iPhone can capture images of space, the invention of the car completely shaped the 20th century and the first ever car was created in 1886! Between these times the car hasn't actually changed a whole lot. Another quote that I found inspiring and think relates to this idea was that “It is amazing what you can do with the right tools”.

Miner stated that the internet/screens can be seen as the equivalent to the car as it is currently shaping the 21st century. Screens are an extremely important part of society now as it can be used for so much, such as, entertainment, work purposes, school and the list goes on.

Finishing the 40 minute video of Wilson Miner I feel a deeper sense of purpose for what I am trying to achieve. The role of designers are arguably one of the most important roles, as they are the ones to leave a dent in the earth which can carry on for years even after their death, which I think is phenomenal. The inventions created can impact humans and the way we live so positively. I also feel more motivated and inspired to really work hard and try to impact someone positively through my designs and creations.
