Post modernism is a climate of cultural change. It challenges the order and clarity of modernism. It was the spirit of the decade. Post- modernism began in the early 1970’s, which impacted a wide range of concepts, it changed how we see things and changed how we live our lives.
Postmodern architecture is a style of building design that emerged in the ’70s and ’80s as a reaction against modernism and the international style. These types of buildings often embrace bright colours, are irony, sculptural, mix of architectural styles of periods that have features of classicism and contemporary styles of architecture. This architecture emerged as a reaction against the modern architecture, that had uniformity, lack of personality and ignorance to the history and culture of the place it was built.
During the 70s music started to really boost as it moved away from classical to more energetic and groovy music. Different genres started to arise and become more popular such as rock and roll, pop, country etc. Postmodern music is more to do with functionality and the effect of globalization than it is with a specific reaction, movement, or attitude, artists started to include lyrics with major problems in the world.
In the post modernism era, ‘punk era’ arises, people started dressing in a gothic/punk style, this was a aggressive and sort or rebelling movement, which was closely aligned with the post modern music. The clothes suited the lifestyle of those with limited cash due to unemployment and the general low-income school leavers or students often experience, they would wear clothes that would look ripped or cut.
Typically, post modern films broke down the cultural divide between higher and lower class and often focused on gender, race, class and culture with the goal of creating something that does not abide by traditional narrative expression. In cinema, Postmodernism created more darker films which pressured those to be aware of issues in the world with a hint of detached irony. Postmodernism also would blend genres or mess with he narrative nature of the film, creating an almost uncomfortable experience for the viewer.
Weingart is a graphic designer who is known for his contribution tot eh New Wave Typography. He rejected the international style and laid the foundation for the New-wave typographic movement. His designs were based of the Swiss Design. His designs were experimental, instead of using traditional letters for typography he decided to use shapes and forms, he didn't use grids and use obscure spacing, letter overlapping's.
He also experimented with a simple handkerchief, he scrunched this piece of fabric up and used the creases that it made to create some of his designs. He stretched the boundaries of typography and graphic design which is praised. The most mind blowing part of his designs was he created them pre computers or technology.
