This week was about the ethical and Social Implications of Emerging Technologies.

AI integrating into everyday life

Emerging Technologies like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, wearable technology, entertainment devices and smart homes are transforming the way we live life. They have changed how we live and do basic activities, for example, we have AI voice assistants like Alexa to make physical changes in a smart home. We can use our facial recognition to unlock phones, or we can use AI ro predict text before we type. AI can decide what we see on apps we use everyday like TikTok, they use algorithms to personalise content. Emerging Technologies can support doctors with faster diagnostics, improving peoples health and overall healthcare. Other ways Emerging technologies have impacts us include Transportation, Banking and finance, shopping, education and entertainment.

Social & Ethical Implications

How that affects us?

Emerging technologies are rapidly changing the job market. The tasks that they can now perform were once done by humans and now are not needed as companies can use these AI and robotics to do the job for them and also not have to pay them a living wage, boosting the companies general wealth.

As a UX Designer, I can't help but feel slightly unsettled by the rise in emerging technologies. AI tools are getting better each day at conducting research, generating screens, analysing data much faster that I could. Sometimes I feel like the progress I have made in the last couple of years could be undervalued in a job place. I could completely understand that companies might want to use these AI tools to cut spending costs, reducing the need for real human input. Although, on the other hand I can also see my job not being affected as much by AI replacement as empathy and insight is at the core of great UX. I could definitely work with AI and learning as it learns too.
