This week we looked at storyboards and sitemaps, and how these are helpful when coming up with a idea for a project as you can look at a situation where a user has a problem.

Storyboards

Storyboards are visual planning tools, they consist of illustrations or images in a sequence to visualize a situation. Storyboards are used in many industries such as film, advertisement, animation etc.

We were also reassured that these illustrations do not have to be great, we just need to understand them. We were shown an image of a sketch made by Micheal Scorsese, one of the most successful directors of all time. His sketches for a very iconic scene were almost unrecognisable if you did not have the scene beside it. However, all that matters is he was able to understand his sketch and the idea he had behind it and make it come to life.

Storyboards are essential for storytelling and planning. They can act as communication among a team such as a film crew, they can clarify the storyline, characters emotions or struggles, important plot points and maintaining an efficient flow. They can also allow the designer to understand their users more and how they can help their users.

I recently seen the Game of Thrones Storyboards which was fascinating to see with the show being so incredibly successful.

I also had a look at some of the most successful storyboards from some of the most famous films and some of my favourite films such as Psycho and No Country for Old Men. This gave me a bit of inspiration and proof that storyboards are actually effective and a great way to idealise your idea.
