This week we looked at the rise of AI within different parts of life and UX. We considered the benefits and drawbacks of this and how it may affect the future of human invention and creation.

AI In Storytelling

AI can output stories and tales that are completely made up, they may also be quite interesting and valuable to the user, however is this It is improtant to understand how the AI system actually works before trying to decide whether it is a good thing or not. When the user asks an AI generative service to do something, the service has Large LanguageModels, which operate similar to trained brains, process the prompt from the user and add it to a training data set for similar future prompts. The LLMs reference a set of rules and structured data sets to determine what should be included.

The storytelling community has to question if AI will potentially make human storytellers pointless, or become a collaborative tool to enhance their own storytelling. This is something we have to think about as the development of AI has people questioning the security of certain careers. Although AI can be great for generating quick and exciting stories, storytelling is about emotions such as feeling heartbreak or euphoria. It can be descriptions of ideas, belief, life lessons etc. This is something AI cannot experience.

AI's Impact on Storytelling: Can It Replicate Human Experiences?

Can AI create original ideas?

AI creates responses that are based on pre existing content and data, which limits its ability to generate original ideas. The response from AI are just rearranged information that already exist on the internet. Although learning this, I believe that every idea can be considered “not original”, because everything we know and have, has been from the knowledge of previous life. Making you question if AI does develop enough o be able to create original thoughts, will it make a difference or matter?

This reminded me of a quote from Pablo Picasso. “Good Artists copy, Great Artists Steal”. I think this relates a lot to this question, as this wasn't to emphasise plagiarism or theft, but more the idea that creativity comes from inspiration from others and transforming it into your own.

For a follow up question, Will AI eventually be able to create authentic thoughts?. For now, AI is reliant on human input and cannot create original ideas, however it does feel like we are getting closer to AI being able to think for themselves. To be able to reach this, the approach will most likely need to change, “Possibly moving from precise data representation to a more abstract form. Our current models, limited by data snapshots, will need continuous updates.”

Will AI develop consciousness and original thought?

Something interesting to me was the creator of one of my favourite shows, Black Mirror, which tends to promote futuristic and thought provoking content, had asked AI to create a new episode for the show. The results he got back included mash up of already published plots in his episodes.

AI Generated and How to identify one?

AI Generated videos are becoming popular especially with content creation and social media. There can be a lot of tells in these videos such as inconsitesies, unnatural movements, lighting, and audio-video mismatches. AI generated videos can be dangerous as they can impersonate celebrities or even trusted political figures, which is called Deepfakes. “Deep” comes from Deep learning, which is a branch of AI uses neural network, which is a “type of machine learning technique that bears some resemblance to how the human brain works”. These are used to make these famous figures vulnerable, spreading misinformation or worse, attempting to advising those who trust that figure.

Overall, I was extremely intrigued during this week's lesson. AI is definitely something I don't want to become a major part of everyday life, although I am also not 100% against the use of AI. Looking at the cons of using AI is extremely scary and makes me hesitant to accept the fact it's developing more and more. However, I think it can also be extremely beneficial and helpful for creating ideas and inspiration when used in a collaborative way. In my opinion I don't think AI will ever override human abilities to generate creative, authentic and relatable ideas. Humans create things based off emotions, beliefs and experiences which allows others to relate to this. Which AI cannot do this. Also, emotions such as empathy are huge factors to successful products and services.
