In this class we looked at Typography and the importance of the Typography we use. We also looked further into our project and started deciding on names.

At the start of class we were asked to upload some name ideas we have came up with for our app. We uploaded these to a Miro board, were others in the class would rate these names with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd sticker.

Below is the Miro board of everyone’s names.

Typography

Typography communicates a message to the user the purpose of the text. We can create a fun environment with typography, we covered the importance of typography and why we need to understand why it’s important. Letterforms have been used as an alternative for a spoken language, this has been used in history for hieroglyphics, Roman numerals, religious studies etc.

After this task, we went over some typography history which we previously learnt last semester. The purpose was to show how important typography is and how important it is to choose the right typeface that matches your project. We were given a random typeface and were asked to create a persona of this typeface based on a person that represents this typeface. I was very confused at the start as personification of a typeface was quite an obscure task.

However, I started researching my font, Futura, and was getting more of an understanding of the task. I had previous knowledge on this font due to researching it last semester for a project so I had an idea of what this person is like. Below is the personal persona that I came up with. I wasn’t extremely confident with how my persona turned out, I would like to explore this topic a bit more to become more familiar with typography more.

Meet your Type

I decided to do some more research into typography, our lecturer advised us to go and look at Meet your Type. Meet your Type is a guide to Typography and how to use type correctly. The whole theme is hinting towards romantic relationship in a comedic way, relating type and love together, the presentation and layout is very appealing and fun. The article has taught me how to choose my typeface more efficiently, how to manipulate it and the different characteristics a typeface has. After reading it I have found a better understanding of the importance typography has when choosing one to fit whatever the purpose is. I also learned so much about the anatomy of type, some of the words/descriptions that I had never heard before are now what I see, think and associate when I see a new font.
