For the introduction week, we have been asked to complete our own CV. This will be extremely helpful during placement and future career opportunities. I am familiar with CVs as I have made many in the past for part time jobs, however I do not know the etiquette of a professional CV. After the introduction class, we started back into the usual lectures.
In this class we were asked to come up with some attributes that we are hoping to find in a job, colleagues or employment and write them on a post it note. After doing so we stuck them up on the board and then went through as a class and put them all into different categories.
The most important category to people was the Co Workers and Colleagues, and environment. The lecture explained after that it is important to know what you are looking for in a job and what you aren't. This is because business’ will take advantage of you and your work, from experience I can say this is 100% accurate. An example to the lecturer provided was that Companies may assume you will work over your contracted hours and make you feel guilty for not so.
The post it notes I had written were, “Flexibility” in things such as remote working, “Creativity” in your projects, and “Unformal” with relationships with employers to ensure a relaxed stress free environment. In my opinion, I want my job to have friendly, encouraging, creative co workers. I believe this is important for employee well being, as well as collaborations and productivity. A positive work environment allows you to be relaxed and encouraged to work well with no pressure. I also think flexibility in the workspace is great too. Jobs that offer remote working, flexible hours, project based assignments and new courses to develop skills are the most attractive to me.
The next task was to select a random post-it with a job title on it. Keep it a secret while your partner must guess the job title within 20 questions. The job title I had selected was a “Music Therapist”, snd my partners was a “Food Connoisseur”. I had actually managed to guess this correct and my partner guessed mine. The main questions that gave away a lot were “Do you work with people?”, “Do you help people?” or “Do you work with something in specific?”.
Overall, this class was really helpful, I was confused on why we were given these tasks as I didn't see the point but now I understand that it was to make us aware of the importance of understanding most important job qualities and the skills that make up the role. I don't feel as nervous and anxious as I did at the start of class, I am also more confident and aware of what I want from a job and what I am really looking for.
