This week we had an introduction to what we will be looking at and learning this semester, we looked at the brief and ideation methods. This class focused on the future of design, and what to expect from technology in the next few years.

Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution was an enormous growth of technological, economic and social change that began in Britain in the late 18th century and which later spread worldwide. This marked the introduction to industrial economies and machine based manufacturing. Some impacts that this revolution has produced is Economic Growth, Innovations, Urbanisation and Social Change. In past years we have experience 4 phases of the Industrial Revolution starting from the 1760s to 2000s.

In recent years, we are currently entering a new Industrial Revolution, Industry 5.0. The previous industry 4.0, has brought “smart” technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud connectivity, and real-time ****data analytics to the world of industry and manufacturing. Industry 4.0 revolution is a step towards efficiency, productivity, and cyberphysical systems. This revolution has introduced emerging smart technology and advancements in biotechnology, renewable energy and automation.

Now we are entering the new Industry 5.0, which is about collaboration with humans and the new technologies. Although it is does not count as a completely new Industrial Revolution it is definitely a step further than 4.0. 5.0 has human creativity and well being at the centre of its mission, merging speed and efficiency of technology with the involvement of humans.

Movies

Something that I found really interesting was the movies that have predicted the future and what the future of technology will look like. I had a look at some movies and what they had predicted, being a movie fan I have seen a good few of these movies. However, having grown up with technology being already heavily used and popular I ignorantly didn't clock that these movies had actually predicted the technology that we have now.

I will definitely be using movies as a source of inspiration for the project ideas, as some movies go further into the future and predict what it will look like. One of my favourite movies, Her, has predicted AI relationships and Human and Computer Relationships. Predicting how AI could potentially evolve to be emotionally intelligent and act as companions to humans.

Design Thinking

We also looked at design thinking, this has been a topic that has came up a few times so it was good to be reminded of this. We looked at different mindsets that have been proven to improve creativity and outcomes. place human creativity and well-being at the centre of industry – to merge the speed and efficiency of machine technologies with the ingenuity and talent of human counterparts.

The Double Diamond theory, combining divergent and convergent thinking, is always talked about when mentioning design thinking. This theory is definitely a great approach to problems and provides a clear strategy that will boost creativity. As we are in the “discovery” stage, we are exploring as much ideas before focusing on one. Keeping an open-mind is key to achieving an optimal solution.
