For our second project we were asked to complete a group presentation surrounding a chosen topic. Out of the topics we could choose from the team decided to go with Bauhaus and the New Typography as there will be loads of information about this. The Bauhaus was arguably the single most influential modernist art school of the 20th century. Its approach to teaching, and to the relationship between art, society, and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and in the United States long after its closure under Nazi pressure in 1933.

For this project we had 5 members in our group, and the length the presentation had to be was roughly 10 minutes, so we worked out we all had 2 minutes to talk. The first meeting we had was what topics each of us will talk about.

One of the group members suggested that we each take a section and talk about it individually, they came up with 5 topics. The start of the Bauhaus and what it is, the most influential people from the Bauhaus, before the Bauhaus, the impact and its education. So from here we chose our topics and began research. My topic was “The most influential people from the Bauhaus” as I wanted to learn more about the masters of Design and Typography.

Research

My first part of the research was to find out who taught or attended the Bauhaus, and decide who I will be researching. The people I decided on researching and talking about were Paul Klee, Herbert Bayer and Josef Albers.

The Bauhaus was arguably the most influential modernist art school of the 20 th century. The Bauhaus school really boosted the careers of many designers and artists. The school had an area for every type of art, therefore every type of designer.

Paul Klee as a Swiss-born German artist. Teaching and contributing to the movement that would come to be known as “abstraction” in the Bauhaus. His contribution to the colour theory, with his art being derived from expressionism, surrealism, his bold use of crashing colours influenced future artists incredibly.

Herbert Bayer was an Austrian/American graphic designer, painter, photographer, sculptor, art director, environmental and interior designer, and architect. He ran the first ever class of typography in Bauhaus. He created a universal typeface, which became Bauhaus’ official typeface. From 1921 to 1923 he attended the Bauhaus. He helped create the modern discipline of graphic design by using photography, type and geometric systems to promote ideas and products

Josef Albers was a German/American Artist considered the most influential teacher of the 20th century. He worked in multiple sections including photography, typography, printmaking etc. His best known work is his theoretic work with colour psychology. His most important creation included compositions made of coloured glass, as well as furniture design, metalwork, and typography. During his time in Bauhaus, Albers explored a style of painting using abstract patterns and the use of primary colours along with white and black.

After I had my basic information to talk about, I was ready to start gathering photos and designing my slides. I decided I was going to present a photo of the designer then a piece of their work to show their influence. We had a group discussion and agreed on keeping the Bauhaus official design and using their colours that were red blue and yellow. We also gathered some inspiration for our slides. The iconic use of geometrical shapes and colours were influential to the final design of our slides.

Sketches

Before designing my slides I decided to do some sketching first to layout exactly how I want them to look, this made designing the slides so much easier as all I had to do was rotate and enlarge the text and shapes. Below are the sketches I made for my slides.

I then decided to create my slides on figma and am so pleased with how they turned out. I redid some of my designs on figma. Below is my final designs for my group presentation.
