Gestalt’s Principle comes from psychology and explains how humans naturally organise visual information. The word “Gestalt” means “unified whole”, we tend to see objects as part of a larger picture and not isolated parts.

In UX, these principles help make designs easier to understand more natural to use and visually pleasing. This helps users quickly understand what elements go together, reducing confusion and improving navigation. It makes design feel natural and intuitive.

Main Gestalt Principles

• Proximity - things close to eachotehr are seen as a group
• Similarity - elects that look similar are seen as the same group
• Continuity - Our eyes naturally follow smooth paths rather than sudden change
• Closure - We fill in missing parts of an incomplete design to see whole
• Figure/Ground - We separate the main focus from the background
• Common Fate - Objects moving in the same direction are seen as related
• Symmetry and Order- We prefer things that are symmetrical, balanced and orderly.

As Designers…

As designers we must understand that users see objects close to eahcother as groups, similar to objects that look alike. If we want to make this effect on the user we must follow these principles.
